Our Mission Statement
The Youth Health Empowerment and Action Research Team (y-HEART) is a research lab at St. John’s University directed by Dr. Scyatta A. Wallace.
y-HEART focuses on how social interactions with one’s peers and family as well as cultural factors, like race, media, and one’s neighborhood, effect sexual risk and substance use among urban Black youth.
y-HEART studies use mixed methods, including interviews and surveys to gather data that helps to inform community-based programs and social policies.
Our goal is to empower urban Black youth and their families to make informed choices about their health, with a focus on HIV prevention.
